Kashmir’s wildest valley. Cut off by snow for seven or eight months a year. No hotels, no network, no crowds — just the Marusudar river, the meadows, and people who still live exactly as they always have.
Warwan is not a big-van route. The Margan Top road is narrow, some patches are still rough, and the descent is steep. Taking a 17-seater Urbania or Tempo up there isn’t sensible — we won’t do it, even if it costs us the booking.
What Warwan needs is an SUV or a smaller vehicle, and a driver who knows the road. That’s what we arrange. A large group means multiple SUVs, not one van. This is a safety call, not a marketing one.
Warwan technically sits in Kishtwar district, but the only way in from the Kashmir side is over Margan Top. There’s no direct motorable road from Kishtwar town — the route runs from Anantnag and Kokernag.
The Marusudar river (also called Mariv Sudir or the Marwah) runs through the valley — the Chenab’s largest tributary. On either side are meadows, buckwheat fields and houses built of timber and mud. The villages are Inshan (the main hub), Basmina, Sukhnai, Dasbal, Rikinwas and Margi.
On a clear day, Nun (7,135 m) and Kun (7,877 m) are visible from Margan Top — and there are four alpine lakes, known locally as Choharnag, near the pass.
Margan Top is completely snowbound in winter and the valley is cut off from the world. Best window: July–September; broadly June to November depending on snow.
Mobile signal ends once you cross Margan Top. BSNL sometimes works at Inshan, but don’t rely on it. Tell family beforehand.
Homestays only (Inshan, Basmina, Sukhnai) or tents. Home-cooked local Kashmiri food, often featuring the valley’s well-known buckwheat.
Much of it is now paved — a big improvement. But it’s narrow, and a few rough patches remain. Hence the SUV.
Indian nationals generally don’t need a separate ILP — standard photo ID is usually sufficient at checkpoints, with an entry at the Army check post. We confirm current rules before you travel.
The Marusudar is known for exceptional trout — 2 to 6 kg, with a distinctive rainbow colour. There’s real potential here for angling.
Srinagar → Achabal/Kokernag → Vailoo → Larnoo → Mati Gawran → Margan Top → Inshan. Roughly 140 km and about six hours — and those hours come from the road, not the distance.
Stop for thirty minutes at Margan Top. Kashmir valley on one side, Warwan on the other — two entirely different worlds, a few hundred metres apart. Snow lingers on the ridge into July.
Allow 2–3 days minimum. Warwan is emphatically not a day trip. Stay at Inshan, and if you can, go on to Sukhnai.
