About Pangong

Pangong Tso is a long, narrow, brackish lake stretching from Ladakh into Tibet โ€” most of it lies on the Chinese side. Its colour shifts through the day: deep blue in the morning, turquoise at midday, silver-grey by evening. Photographs don’t do it justice.

It’s roughly five hours from Leh, over Chang La (~17,590 ft) โ€” itself one of the highest motorable passes in the world.

The Essentials

๐Ÿชช Inner Line Permit

An ILP is required for Pangong (Indian nationals) or a Protected Area Permit (foreigners), issued by the Leh administration. Rules change, so we guide you through the current process.

๐Ÿซ The Altitude Is Serious

14,270 ft, over Chang La at 17,590 ft. Coming here without acclimatizing in Leh is asking for altitude sickness. Spend one or two nights in Leh first.

๐Ÿš™ The Vehicle

Inner Ladakh circuits generally require a Leh-registered vehicle under union rules. We arrange one through our local network.

๐Ÿ•๏ธ Day Trip or Camp?

A day trip means 10โ€“11 hours of driving and it’s tiring. A lakeside camp gives you sunset, the night sky and sunrise. If you’re feeling well, camp.

๐ŸŒก๏ธ The Cold

Near freezing at night, even in summer. Camps have basic heating. Bring layers regardless of the month.

๐Ÿ“ถ No Network

There’s generally no mobile signal. Tell family beforehand.

Day Trip or Overnight โ€” An Honest Take

Day trip: leave Leh at 5 or 6am, drive about five hours, spend two or three hours at the lake, then five hours back. It’s doable, but it’s a whole day in a vehicle at altitude.

Overnight camp: arrive unhurried, watch the sunset, look at a night sky you’ve probably never seen the like of, and wake to the water changing colour. This is what people remember.

But: sleeping at 14,270 ft doesn’t suit everyone. If you had headaches or trouble sleeping in Leh, the day trip is the safer choice. Health first.
