Doodhpathri is a wide meadow valley in Budgam district, roughly 40 to 45 km from Srinagar, with a drive time of about 1.5 to 2 hours. It is far less crowded than Gulmarg or Pahalgam, which makes it a favourite for families and groups who want open green meadows, pine forest and the Shaliganga stream without the tourist rush.
The last part of the route climbs through forest on a narrower hill road, so an experienced local driver makes a real difference. Once you arrive, most of the day is spent walking across the meadows, sitting by the stream and enjoying a picnic. Facilities are basic compared to the bigger resorts, so carrying water and snacks is a good idea.
Leave Srinagar around 8:30 to 9 am, reach Doodhpathri by late morning, and spend 4 to 5 hours in the meadows. Start back by 4 pm to finish the forest stretch in good light. Doodhpathri pairs well with a relaxed day after a longer trip to Gulmarg or Sonamarg.
Inside the meadow area, pony rides are run by local operators and priced separately. Some interior points may be reachable only on foot or by pony. Your driver will guide the group on what is practical for your time and mobility.
April to October is the best window, with the meadows greenest from May to August. In winter the area receives snow, and access to the upper stretch depends on road conditions on the day.
