Keran Valley & Teetwal โ€” On the Banks of the Kishanganga

A village on the LoC where you can see Pakistan across the river. Kupwara’s border belt is now open to tourists โ€” Keran, Teetwal, Sadhna Top, the Sharda Temple. We take you there, and we explain the permit process properly.

โš ๏ธ First โ€” Permits and Security

This is an LoC area. Visiting requires permission โ€” generally from the DC/SP Kupwara office, with Army or local police clearance for forward areas. There are several check posts along the way where you’ll need to produce photo ID, so carry originals.

Rules change. The security situation, the requirements for foreign nationals, and even access itself can shift. So we confirm the current status before your date and tell you the truth โ€” we won’t say “it’ll be fine” just to take a booking and leave you stranded at a checkpoint.

What’s at Keran

The Kishanganga River

The river itself is the LoC. You’re on one side; villages in Pakistan-administered Kashmir are on the other โ€” close enough to see people going about their day. It’s a feeling you won’t get anywhere else.

Teetwal Crossing Bridge

In Teetwal, the last Indian village โ€” a historic crossing point, and now one of the area’s main attractions.

Sharda Temple (Teetwal)

A historic site connected to Sharda Peeth, recently rebuilt, and of considerable significance for Hindu pilgrims.

Sadhna Top

The pass on the way to Karnah and Tangdhar, with views on both sides. There’s a cafรฉ, viewpoints, a war museum and a Pahari cultural centre.

Homestays

Keran has no hotels โ€” accommodation is in local homestays, in villagers’ own homes. Simple, warm, genuinely hospitable.

Machil & Karnah

The neighbouring border sectors. These need separate permissions and more days.

Route & Vehicle

Srinagar โ†’ Kupwara โ†’ Keran is roughly 105 km, but takes 7โ€“8 hours โ€” mountain road, check posts and the climb through Firkian Gali. Don’t let the distance mislead you.

Vehicle: our Force Urbania and Tempo Traveller can do this route, but the road is narrow in places. Depending on your group size we’ll tell you honestly whether a large van makes sense or a smaller vehicle would be better โ€” the point is to arrive comfortably, not to get stuck.

Allow at least two days. Keran isn’t a day trip. Stay a night in a homestay, or you’ll spend the whole time driving.

FAQ

Questions, Answered

Yes โ€” Keran, Teetwal and the Karnah belt in Kupwara have been opened up for tourism and see steady visitors, with the administration developing facilities there. But it remains an LoC area: permission is required, there are security check posts, and access can change. We confirm the current status before your date.
Yes โ€” permission is generally required (typically via the DC/SP Kupwara office, with Army or police clearance for forward areas), and you must carry original photo ID for the check posts. Rules change and differ for foreign nationals, so confirm current requirements โ€” we guide you through the process.
About 105 km, but budget 7โ€“8 hours โ€” it’s mountain road with check posts, not a highway. The distance is misleading. We recommend at least one overnight rather than a day trip.
There are no hotels โ€” Keran has local homestays run by village families. Simple, warm and genuinely hospitable, with home-cooked Kashmiri food. We help arrange them.
The Teetwal crossing bridge, the Sharda Temple, and the Kishanganga river which forms the LoC โ€” from the Indian side you can see villages across the water. Sadhna Top, the cafรฉ, a war museum and a cultural centre are on the Karnah route.
Rules for foreign nationals in LoC areas are different and stricter, and they change. Please don’t assume โ€” tell us which passports are in your group and we’ll check the current position before you plan anything.

Plan Keran or Teetwal โ€” Permits Included

For the LoC belt we confirm permits and current status first, then plan your trip.
