Kashmir to Ladakh β€” Five Things to Know

1. The window is Jun–Oct

Zoji La is closed the rest of the year. This isn’t in your hands β€” pick your dates around it first.

2. It takes two days to Leh

~420 km, with a Kargil overnight. Pushing through in one day is an altitude risk.

3. Acclimatization isn’t optional

Leh is ~11,500 ft. Don’t rush to Pangong on arrival. One rest day saves the whole trip.

4. You’ll need permits (inner areas)

An ILP for Indians, a PAP for foreigners, for Pangong and Nubra. Issued in Leh.

5. Two vehicles, two legs

The highway leg is our van; inner circuits use a Leh-registered vehicle under union rules β€” details below.

πŸ”Ž How Ladakh Actually Works β€” Worth Reading

Ladakh has local taxi union rules. In practice: the Srinagar–Kargil–Leh highway leg we run with our own Force Urbania or Tempo Traveller β€” the whole group together, one driver throughout. But for the circuits inside Ladakh (Pangong, Nubra, Khardung La, local sightseeing), a Leh-registered vehicle is generally required, and we coordinate one through our local network.

We say this upfront, because many operators don’t and travellers only discover it in Leh. We plan your whole trip either way β€” we just keep the mechanics honest. Regd. JKEA00003597.

The Vehicle β€” Which, and Where

Highway leg (our van)

Force Urbania 13/17 β€” recliner seats make a real difference across 7–8 hours. Or a Tempo Traveller 12/17 for budget. The whole group together.

Inner circuits (local network)

Pangong, Nubra, Khardung La and Leh local sightseeing generally require a Leh-registered vehicle. We coordinate it, so you don’t have to go hunting for one on arrival.

Rates β€” Honestly

We can’t publish a fixed per-day rate for Ladakh, and operators who do usually aren’t telling you the whole story. The cost genuinely depends on how many days, which route (Pangong/Nubra), the vehicle mix (highway van plus inner vehicle), and stays.

So we send a custom all-inclusive quote instead, spelling out the highway leg, inner circuit coordination and permit guidance. No surprises.

Rates inside Kashmir are fixed β€” see our cost guide. Ladakh is a different matter, so we treat it differently.

FAQ

Questions, Answered

Five things: travel between June and October (the Zoji La window), allow two days to reach Leh with a Kargil overnight, build in an acclimatization day in Leh, arrange Inner Line Permits for Pangong and Nubra, and understand that the highway leg and inner-Ladakh circuits use different vehicles. Message us your dates and group size and we’ll plan it with you.
Minimum five days for Kargil, Leh and Pangong with proper acclimatization. Seven days to add Nubra Valley and Khardung La at a comfortable pace. Driving back over the highway needs two more days than flying out of Leh.
The Srinagar–Kargil–Leh highway, yes β€” that’s our own vehicle with our driver. For inner-Ladakh circuits like Pangong and Nubra, Ladakh taxi union rules generally require Leh-registered vehicles, which we coordinate through our local network. We tell you this upfront because many operators don’t.
It’s custom-quoted β€” the cost depends on days, route (whether you add Pangong or Nubra), vehicle mix and stays. Anyone quoting a single flat number is leaving something out. Send us your plan and we’ll break it down fully.
Roughly June to October, depending on Zoji La conditions each year. It’s snowbound and closed the rest of the time, when Leh is reachable only by air.
Not for Leh town, but yes for protected inner areas like Pangong and Nubra β€” an Inner Line Permit for Indians, a Protected Area Permit for foreigners, issued by the Leh administration. Rules change, so confirm current requirements; we guide you through the process.
Many families do it β€” but altitude demands respect. Build in acclimatization, consult a doctor if anyone has heart, lung or blood-pressure conditions, and consider the Urbania for its recliner seats on the long highway days. Read our permits and altitude guide first.
