Best Time to Visit Leh Ladakh

Ladakh’s calendar is set by Zoji La, not by you. Here’s the month-by-month truth β€” when the road is open, what you’ll get, and when not to come at all.

The Most Important Thing

If you want to reach Ladakh by road from Kashmir, your window is roughly June to October β€” because Zoji La is snowbound and closed the rest of the year. That isn’t negotiable. Zoji La guide β†’

Leh itself is reachable by air all year β€” but then it isn’t the Kashmir-to-Ladakh road trip, which is the whole point.

So When Should You Go?

First time? Want certainty?

July–August. Everything stays open β€” Zoji La, the inner circuits, the camps. Crowded, but no anxiety.

Want the best experience?

September. Clear skies, fewer people, the best colours. Just be ready for the cold.

At the edge of the season?

Late May or late October β€” possible, but risky. We’ll tell you the truth rather than take a booking we can’t deliver.

Want Leh in winter?

Fly in β€” for the Chadar trek and similar. The road from Kashmir won’t be open. That’s a different trip.

FAQ

Questions, Answered

Roughly June to October, because the Srinagar–Leh road depends on Zoji La being open. July–August has the most reliable access; September offers clear skies and fewer crowds, and is our own favourite.
No β€” Zoji La is snowbound and closed from around November to May. In winter, Leh is reachable only by air.
It’s excellent β€” clear skies, thinner crowds, beautiful colours. Just pack for real cold, and be aware some camps start closing towards the end of the season.
It’s a gamble. The BRO is usually still clearing Zoji La, and it sometimes opens only in late May. If you plan for May, keep a Plan B β€” we’ll give you the honest status rather than take a booking we can’t deliver.
July and August β€” peak season, when everything is reliably open. If crowds bother you, September gives similar access with far fewer people.
