Zoji La is the most critical stretch of the Srinagar–Leh highway — the steep climb after Sonamarg that connects the Kashmir valley to Drass and Ladakh. It’s roughly 11,575 ft, and much of it is single-lane, with mountain on one side and a drop on the other.
Every winter it closes completely under snow. The Border Roads Organisation spends months digging it out — and only then does the Leh road open. So the entire calendar of a Leh trip is set by Zoji La, not by you.
The highway is usually open from around June until October. The exact dates change every year with the weather — there’s no fixed calendar.
After a light winter it can open by late May; after heavy snow, not until mid-June. Keep your plans flexible.
Usually October or November with the first heavy snowfall. After that, Leh is reachable only by air.
Convoy timings, one-way traffic or BRO work can cause delays. We track the current status.
There’s no shortcut around Zoji La. If it’s closed, it’s closed — no operator can get you across. Anyone who says “it’ll be fine” is lying to you.
