Sonamarg is about 80 km north-east of Srinagar along the Sindh river, and the drive normally takes 2.5 to 3 hours. The road runs through Ganderbal and Kangan before opening into the Sonamarg valley. It is one of the most scenic drives in Kashmir, which is exactly why groups prefer travelling together in one vehicle with large windows rather than splitting across several cabs.
Leave Srinagar by 8 am to make the most of daylight. Stops along the Sindh river are popular on the way. In Sonamarg, the main excursion is Thajiwas Glacier, reached on foot or by pony from the town. Groups usually start back by 3:30 to 4 pm, as the return drive is long and the road is best covered in daylight.
Some points beyond the main town, such as certain viewpoints towards Zoji La, may require local union vehicles under local rules. Your driver will explain what is allowed on the day, so the group can plan time and costs before arriving.
On a 5 to 6 hour round trip, seat comfort matters more than on short city runs. Families with elders often choose the Force Urbania for its recliner seats and smoother ride. See Urbania vs Tempo Traveller for a full comparison.
Sonamarg is usually best visited from April to October. In winter, heavy snowfall can close or restrict the road beyond certain points, and access depends on snow clearance. Sonamarg is also the route towards Baltal for the Amarnath Yatra, so traffic and security checks can increase during the Yatra period. Check our Amarnath Yatra transport page if you are travelling then.
Fares include the vehicle, driver, fuel, tolls and parking. Pony rides, local union vehicles, sledges in snow season and meals are paid separately.
