On a Kashmir trip, your driver shapes the day more than any brochure does. Ours are local, hold commercial licences, and drive these routes through every season, which matters on climbs like Tangmarg to Gulmarg, the Sindh valley road to Sonamarg, Razdan Pass towards Gurez and Zoji La on the way to Ladakh.
Snow changes everything between December and March. Drivers check road status before departure, and if authorities restrict a stretch, for example the final climb to Gulmarg, you are told before you leave so the day can be re-planned instead of wasted.
Drivers speak Kashmiri, Urdu and Hindi, and manage comfortably in basic English with visitors from outside India. Note that prepaid SIM cards issued outside Jammu and Kashmir do not work in the valley, so your driver’s number is often the most reliable contact during the trip.
